|||Durban - The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal is appalled by the brutality shown by robbers who attacked a pension pay point in Lindelani, it said on Friday.
“The ANC strongly condemns this ferocious incident and commends the police for their swift response that led to the arrest of one suspect,” the party said in a statement.
“We hope the police will continue searching for the suspects who are still at large.”
Police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane said a group of men opened fire at a pension pay point in the Lindelani area of Durban's KwaMashu township on Friday morning. A pensioner died at the scene, while two security guards died at a nearby clinic.
Three other people were injured. One of the armed robbers was arrested. The others fled in a car. Zwane said the robbers took the security guards' guns. No pension money was stolen.
The African National Congress in the province urged the SA Social Security Agency to strengthen security at all pay points in the province.
