|||Johannesburg - Two suspected hijackers were wounded in a shoot-out at a KwaMashu hostel, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Monday.
Police were following up information about a hijacked Kia when they spotted the car at a men's hostel on Sunday evening, Colonel Vincent Mdunge said.
“When the officers approached the vehicle, the two occupants started shooting at them and the officers retaliated in self-defence,” he said.
During the exchange of gunfire, one suspect, 30, was wounded in the head and thigh. Another was shot in the thigh.
The two were taken to hospital under police guard.
A policeman was also injured.
“The police seized a 9mm pistol with a filed-off serial number from the suspects and recovered the hijacked vehicle,” said Mdunge.
The firearm will be sent for ballistic testing to determine if it had been used in other crimes.
