KwaZulu-Natal campuses of Unisa are expected to reopen on Monday morning after a nationwide strike over salary increases.
The impasse has been resolved with Unisa and the National Education, Health, and Allied Workers' Union (Nehawu) agreeing to a 7 percent hike, said the institution’s regional spokeswoman, Gcina Nhleko.
Staffers had initially demanded a 12 percent increase.
The protests began on Unisa’s Pretoria campuses last Tuesday.
The campuses in Durban, Pietermaritzburg, Richards Bay joined the strike action on Friday, and were closed.
Students were asked to submit their assignments and register for their second semester studies online.
Unisa KZN said that it had employed independent, part-time tutors in certain subjects.
The examinations are due to begin on May 6.
Neither the provincial secretary of Nehawu, Zola Sapetha, nor the union’s national spokesman, Sizwe Pamla, could be reached for comment. - Mercury
