Durban - Following swift action by Midlands police, three teens appeared in court on Tuesday for a violent assault on two school pupils.

A 15-year-old and two 19-year-olds, Sbonelo Nqayi and Mlungisi Sithole, have been charged with two counts of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and were released on warning into the care of their parents.

The 15-year-old, who cannot be named as he is a minor, also faces a charge of possession of a dangerous weapon.

The case was adjourned in the Pietermaritzburg District Court to May 6 for further investigation, and for the three to secure legal representation.

They were arrested late on Monday following an attack on two pupils at uMlulama High School in Hopewell.

Siyanda Sithole, 16, and Zwelihle Mkhize, 17, were both stabbed multiple times at the school. They are in serious condition at Edendale Hospital.

Investigations established that on Monday morning, two groups of male pupils fought on the school grounds.

A pupil was caught in possession of a bush knife. While an educator was reprimanding the teen in his office, he heard a commotion. He rushed outside and found Sithole and Mkhize on the ground, bleeding.
