|||Durban - A man had to be rescued from on top of a tree after his leg had become wedged under a branch – which he had been cutting – fell on him in Galway, Mayville.
The injured man, only identified as Togo, had been hired by the body corporate of the Galway block of flats in May-ville to cut down several trees in an adjacent park.
Residents had complained that they were not receiving a clear television signal in their homes because of the trees.
Patrick Sissing, 47, who rescued Togo on Saturday, said Togo had been sitting in the crook of the tree when the accident occurred. “The branch he was cutting was supposed to have fallen away from him, but it fell on top of his leg. The branch was huge and heavy.
“He screamed in pain for help. I climbed up a makeshift ladder on the bark of the tree and managed to pull the branch slightly away from his leg. His leg was numb from the lack of blood flow to it. I helped carry him down,” said Sissing.
Togo was taken to hospital.
Sam Adams, who for several years has adopted the park and maintained it, said that according to the parks and pleasure grounds bylaws, no one was allowed to pluck, flower, injure or destroy any plant, tree or shrub growing therein.
“I have heard that residents were complaining about getting no response from the parks department, so they took it upon themselves to hire a man to cut the trees. This almost cost the man his life,” Adams said.
