|||Pietermaritzburg - A KwaZulu-Natal man was jailed for life by the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Monday for killing his lover.
Security guard Thembinkosi Sibiya, 27, was sentenced by Acting Judge Sibusiso Mngomezulu.
He shot and fatally wounded Gugu Ndlela, the mother of his child, in November 2011. She had obtained a protection order against him earlier. Sibiya was sentenced to another five years for kidnapping her.
Mngomezulu imposed a three-year sentence for assault, 15 years for pointing a gun at several people, including his daughter, and 10 years for attempting to murder a man he believed to be sleeping with his lover. All sentences would run concurrently.
Mngomezulu said if the courts did not impose just punishment on criminals, people would be tempted to take the law into their own hands.
