Durban - Musician John Ellis received good news recently when police told him his car, which was stolen eight months ago, had been recovered.

However, the musical equipment that had been in the boot, including two guitars belonging to fellow musician Ard Matthews, have not resurfaced.

Ellis was a victim of two robberies within three weeks last year. The first was when he was followed home to Durban North and his Gibson guitar was stolen from the boot. There is CCTV footage showing he was followed. In the second his car, a Toyota Verso, was taken from a B&B in the Midlands while he was in the middle of a run of concerts.

“I was obviously very surprised as I had given up hope that I would ever get my car back,” he said yesterday.

“These days, when there is so much bad press about crime, it is very encouraging to see that there is a professional approach to solving crime.”

Ellis hopes the guitars will be returned: “The case is bigger than me; they would not divulge any details, but I am sure that there is more information I am not party to.”

He said he was humbled by the generosity of strangers who gave him money after the thefts and fellow musicians who lent him their equipment.
