Durban - A brawl outside a popular nightclub that claimed the life of Mlindi Nzimande started after an argument over a woman, the Durban Regional Court heard on Wednesday.

Advocate Martin Krog, acting for Senzo Majola, on trial for the murder of the young architect, told the Durban Regional Court on Wednesday that shortly before he was attacked by the deceased, an argument had broken out between himself and a man referred to only as “Siya” over Majola’s female companion.

Majola, 32, pleaded not guilty to stabbing Nzimande outside the Boulevard Restaurant and Nightclub on Florida Road in July last year.

Nzimande was pronounced dead on arrival at Addington Hospital that same night.

“The accused (Majola) will say he was the events organiser at the club that night. He had a lady with him who he left with. He returned to the club later that night regarding cash he had to hand over, and left the lady outside. When he came out, Siya was proposing love to the woman and begging her to come with him,” Krog said.

Krog put it to State witness Lunga Pakkies yesterday that it was shortly after Majola told Siya to leave the woman alone that Nzimande came up to him and threatened to beat him.

Krog said Majola was walking away when Nzimande punched him in the face.

“Others joined in the assault, and held Majola’s hands behind his back. During the course of the struggle, Majola shouted for help, his face covered in blood,” Krog said. Pakkies disputed this evidence, maintaining that Majola wasn’t bleeding.

The trial continues in October.
