Durban - Popular Generations actor and muso Anga Makubalo, 24, has landed himself in hot water. Last Sunday, he was caught allegedly speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol on the N2 near Umzinto.

The Port Elizabeth-born star, who plays MJ on Generations, was rushing to the airport for a gig in Botswana in his BMW 320i. The hunky actor was trapped while driving at 196km/h in a 120km/h zone on the N2 Ellingham north-bound.

Makubalo, who is also a BMW Supertech ambassador, was accompanied by a man and two women.

Police confirmed that Anga was arrested and released after paying R3 000 bail.

SAPS spokesman Jay Naicker said police were investigating a case of driving under the influence of intoxicating substances.

“A 24-year-old male was arrested and appeared at Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday. His court appearance results are unknown at this stage since the docket is still at court,” said Naicker.

A Road Traffic Inspectorate officer who could not be named because he is not permitted to speak to the media said the legal blood alcohol limit for drivers was 0.05g for every 100ml of blood. “But he had 0.42g alcohol per 100ml.

“He was very pleasant about his offence. He admitted to speeding and said that he had been drinking the night before in Margate and was rushing to the airport.”

Makubalo was apparently rushing to catch a connecting flight from King Shaka International airport to OR Tambo because he was due to perform at a gig in Gabarone, Botswana, last Sunday night.

“He was arrested and taken to Scottburgh police station. He received bail of R3 000 and his case was adjourned to September 26, pending blood reports,” said the RTI officer.

The Sunday Tribune was unable to establish if he made it to the gig.

Makubalo was unavailable for comment, but Generations publicist Nyagunda Ngwenya confirmed the incident. She said, “He was speeding, but he was not drunk.

“He was running late and wasn’t aware that he was speeding, he only realised when they stopped him that he had exceeded the limit.”

Meanwhile, celebrities such as DJ S’bu, DJ Euphonik, Heinz Winckler and J-Something from Micasa have pledged to always drive sober by participating in Drive Dry, a national responsible drinking campaign designed by Brandhouse, a leading beverage company.
