Durban - KwaZulu-Natal transport, community safety, and liaison MEC Willies Mchunu has condemned the torching of a councillor's office in Umlazi, south of Durban.

“We cannot tolerate anarchy. What is happening in Glebelands seriously undermines the rule of law and it is a clear act of criminality,” Mchunu said on Monday.

People had a right to protest, but vandalising and burning property was not acceptable, he said.

On Sunday, about 200 people burned down the offices at the Glebelands Reunion hostel, said Captain Thulani Zwane.

The residents held a protest about service delivery on Thursday.

Mchunu's spokesman Kwanele Ncalane said the offices were reportedly vandalised because the residents were “revolting against a councillor”.

He said Mchunu had met the leaders of the eThekwini municipality, led by mayor James Nxumalo, human settlements MEC Ravi Pillay, the ANC eThekwini region, and the Glebelands hostel leadership.

Police were investigating a case of arson. No arrests had been made and no injuries had been reported. - Sapa
