Durban - A brother’s love for his sister was tested to the extreme when she ordered him to kill her boyfriend’s alleged lover.

His reward was a cow, which he would then sell to raise funds to obtain his driving licence, improving his chances of getting a job.

Sandile Ngubane spilled the beans in the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Thursday on how - out of a sense of obligation - he had agreed to Bonisiwe Nala’s plot to kill Sibongile Promise Zondi, the woman suspected of having an affair with Nala’s boyfriend, Sbo Hadebe.

Pleading guilty to the September 2010 murder, for which he was expected to be sentenced today, Ngubane said he had been in Durban looking for a job, when his sister had telephoned him several times, saying she had a problem.

“I did not know what the problem was and immediately returned home to Umfolozi.

“When I returned home, Bonisiwe immediately told me that she suspected Hadebe of having an affair with Zondi. She wanted me to kill her,” Ngubane said in his plea. “I was shocked, but she kept insisting that I must help her.”

The next day she asked him again to help her kill Zondi.

“She promised to pay me a cow. I realised that I could sell the cow and raise money that I needed to pay to obtain my driver’s licence. This would then improve my chances of getting a job. I then agreed. I also agreed to help her because she raised me and I felt indebted to her,” Ngubane said.

Later that evening at about 8pm, Ngubane said his sister took him to Zondi’s house, where she was sleeping.

“Bonisiwe gave me a home-made gun to use. She then opened the window to the rondavel and showed me Zondi sleeping in bed. I fired a single gunshot and fled with my sister.”

Ngubane said after the incident he remained in Umfolozi and returned to Durban when his sister failed to give him the cow she had promised him.

He was arrested on June 5 this year and he confessed to the killing as he wanted to “clear his conscience”.
