|||Durban - Sixteen convicted rapists were jailed in KwaZulu-Natal in the past two weeks, police said on Tuesday.
They were among 173 people arrested for rape over the period, Captain Thulani Zwane said.
The 16 were sentenced by various courts in the province to a combined total of 103 years in jail. One of them was sentenced to life imprisonment for a rape he committed in December 2012. The arrests were made between June 14 and 28.
“Maximum sentences were handed down in most cases,” Zwane said.
Provincial police commissioner Lt-Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni said:
“The sentences handed down will send a clear message to like-minded would-be offenders that the police will trace, arrest, and successfully prosecute them.” - Sapa
