|||Durban - A 20-year-old man appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday charged with the murder of two metered-taxi owners and a case of hijacking.
Cebolenkosi Khuzwayo was arrested at his home in Maphumulo over the weekend.
He was expected back in court on August 6 for a formal bail application.
Khuzwayo had also been linked to a hijacking in Sherwood in May, said the police. The hijacked vehicle was found at a scrapyard in Shakaskraal on the North Coast on Sunday.
Detective Warrant Officer David Nzama, of the Mayville police, said Khuzwayo had allegedly had the car towed to the scrapyard after it apparently broke down.
Jhavirlall “Bunny” Deodutt, 57, owner of Bunny cabs, and BL Gwaba, 31, also a taxi owner, were shot dead in May. Gwaba was found dead in Bristow Crescent in Mayville.
The following day Deodutt was found wounded in Bonela and taken to hospital, where he died.
Nzama said a friend of the accused had been arrested, allegedly in possession of an unlicensed firearm, in Montclair on Wednesday.
Nzama said the firearm had been sent for ballistics testing to determine if it was used in any crimes.
Meanwhile, four of the accused’s alleged accomplices, who were arrested in June, are in Westville prison, awaiting trial.
They will appear in court on August 23 on charges of hijacking, robbery and murder.
Nzama said the men would allegedly hire private taxis from central Durban to Cato Manor. En route they would allegedly rob the taxi driver.
