Durban - Two road inspectors were robbed of a sophisticated road assessment tablet computer while doing inspections near Bridge City yesterday.

Devan Naidoo, 32, and his colleague, Renolan Govender, 22, both consulting civil engin-eers, are part of a company contracted by the eThekwini Municipality to conduct visual road assessments in their fully marked road inspections Hyundai.

Naidoo said the incident happened when they stopped in traffic.

“I am not sure where the two men came from. They approached from both sides and opened our doors. Govender was held up with a knife. I was held up with a gun. We did not resist. They kept asking for money.

“The men put their hands in our pockets and took our phones and cash.

“They pulled the tablet PC from Govender. We were saved from any further harm and possibly a hijacking when a vehicle behind us began hooting. The men fled,” said Naidoo.

The two went to report the matter at the Phoenix SAPS, but were sent to the KwaMashu SAPS and then were told to go to the Ntuzuma SAPS.

Naidoo said they opened a case at the oThongathi SAPS. The case would be transferred to the relevant police station.

He said the tablet had been programmed for their type of work and there were only 15 in the municipality. The software program would not be relevant for the person who bought the item stolen. It also included a GPS system.

The robbers also took a back-up flash drive with important road rehabilitation data.
