Durban - Three men hijacked a motorist while she was collecting a parcel of samoosas from her neighbour in Newlands West last week.

May Inarmal, 49, a personal assistant at a Durban company, was taking her daughter to school on Friday morning, before going to work, when she stopped in Dawnwest Road to pick up samoosas from neighbour Rashida Parbhu.

That’s when three men approached her VW Polo and demanded the car keys.

Parbhu, 48, said she had seen three well-dressed teenagers walking past the car. When Inarmal opened the boot to place the parcel inside, the teens ran towards her and demanded the car keys, she said, adding that one had tried to force the keys out of Inarmal’s hand.

Parbhu said she plucked up the courage to tell Inarmal to throw the keys on the floor before screaming frantically to startle the hijackers.

Inarmal’s daughter, Nikitha, 16, was ushered out of the car by one of the hijackers, while another fired several shots.

The hijackers sped off with the car, leaving a stunned Inarmal still holding the parcel of samoosas.

“One of the bullets whizzed by us. Another struck my dog, Laser, on his hind leg.

“A bullet also went through our lounge window,” Parbhu said.

“I am still coming to grips with what happened.”

Inarmal’s husband, Sunil, 50, said she was too distraught to speak about the incident and described it as a narrow escape. He said his wife’s finger had been injured in the struggle for the car keys.

Her personal belongings had been taken with the car, he said.

“My wife was supposed to have fetched another schoolgirl further along the road. The car flew past the schoolgirl and her mother, arousing their suspicion,” he said.

“They phoned me and then alerted the police.”

Laser was taken to a vet, where the bullet wound was stitched.

Newlands West police are investigating.
