An employee of the SA Social Security Agency (Sassa) was taken into custody after he illegally spent R67 000 on a petrol card.
|||Durban - A man accused of defrauding a state agency was arrested in Umzimkulu on Wednesday, KwaZulu-Natal police said.
The employee of the SA Social Security Agency (Sassa) was taken into custody after he illegally spent R67 000 on a petrol card, said Colonel Jay Naicker.
“Between February 2013 and May 2013, the expenditure on one of their vehicle's petrol cards had inexplicably sky-rocketed.”
Apparently, the card was used to fill the state vehicle two or three times a day, although the mileage travelled would be low.
In some cases, the card was used to fill vehicles which did not belong to the state. In other instances, non-existent number plates were used when filling up with petrol, said Naicker.
The transactions were done at various filling stations in Umzimkulu.
The 34-year-old man would appear in the Durban Commercial Crime Court on Thursday.
