One man has been shot dead while another was severely assaulted with a brick in the Lynnfield Park area just outside Pietermaritzburg.

Police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane said the men had been confronted at their home at about 6pm on Monday. It is believed Thembelani Mkhize, 34, and Thobani Ncube, 35, were returning home when they were attacked.
“Mkhize got out of the vehicle and proceeded into the house while Ncube was still parking his vehicle.
“Ncube was confronted by two unknown men who demanded cash from him,” Zwane said.
It is believed Ncube scuffled with the men. One of the attackers picked up a brick and hit him on the head, knocking him unconscious.
It is thought they then saw Mkhize coming out of the house and shot him dead.
The police appeal to anyone with information to call Zizamele Mkhize at 031 785 9028.
