Community Safety MEC Willies Mchunu has condemned the brutal killing of two men in KwaNongoma.
|||Durban - Community Safety MEC Willies Mchunu has condemned the brutal killing of two men in KwaNongoma yesterday.
Police were reluctant to speculate on the motive for the killings of Bhande Joseph Khumalo, 71, and Hlehla Sibiya, 61, but Mchunu has linked the deaths to a long-running feud between two families in eMatheni village.
Spokesman, Colonel Vincent Mdunge said the two had being attacked by unknown armed assailants.
He said that police were monitoring the situation.
Mchunu yesterday said he was disturbed at the conflict and killings in the area, despite several attempts to broker a lasting peace. He appealed to the parties involved to use the peace initiatives to resolve the conflict without further bloodshed.
It was alleged that the conflict, initially involving the Sibiya and Buthelezi families who operate taxi businesses in the area, had engulfed the village of eMatheni, with the residents being forced to choose sides between the two feuding families.
More than 20 people have been killed, with some being shot dead in Gauteng.
l The Maphumulo Taxi Association in KwaDukuza (Stanger) closed its operations yesterday morning after shooting broke out between rival taxi factions.
