|||Durban - A Durban woman underwent skin graft surgery on Tuesday night after a man known to her allegedly threw a kettle of hot water at her.
The incident took place during Women’s Day and Eid celebrations on Friday.
The attacker, a 26-year-old man from Newlands West, was due to appear in the Newlands West Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday on a charge of attempted murder.
Bilquees Hussain suffered second-degree burns to her left arm, stomach and thighs after allegedly being attacked at the man’s house.
The 21-year-old mother is in a stable condition in the intensive care unit at St Augustine’s Hospital.
Her mother, Fathima Hussain, said she had tried to telephone her daughter to wish her for Eid but could not get through to her until after 8pm.
“I told her she could still come home and have supper with us but she declined.
“Moments later I received a call to say that she was in hospital.” Hussain said her daughter was initially admitted to Addington Hospital with burn wounds.
“It appears that she had been beaten up. She managed to find the strength to get up off the floor and go to the bathroom to wash up. That’s when he threw the water on her,” she said. “Her three-year-old son witnessed the incident and is traumatised.”
The Newlands East police are investigating.
