Makhosazana Langeni, accused of planning a hit on her sons, seemed unfazed as she sat inside holding cells.

Durban - The woman accused of approaching a hitman to have her sons killed appeared unfazed as she sat in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court holding cells, posing for photographers before she appeared in court on Wednesday.

Makhosazana Langeni, 50, from Gamalakhe township near Margate, is alleged to have approached her relative about killing her sons, Nkazimulo, 21, and Nkanyiso, 24.

She was also alleged to have offered the hitman - recently released from prison on parole - R25 000 for each child. She had asked for a discount from him, considering that she would have given him three more jobs once he had executed these two successfully.

The other three jobs were to kill her other children.

The court’s auditorium was filled to capacity and included relatives, her sisters, neighbours and fellow parishoners of the Methodist Church of Southern Africa, which Langeni attended.

They had expected Langeni, who faces two counts of conspiracy to commit murder, to lash out at them for being there.

But she walked quietly into the dock.

Her attorney, R Ngcobo, warned photographers not to take any pictures as she left the dock, saying legal action would be taken against them as the magistrate had ordered that no pictures be taken in court.

It had been anticipated that Langeni would make a formal bail application, but State prosecutor Sohana Moodley said the case had previously been adjourned for a mental assessment report on Langeni, and the State had to now decide whether there was anything to suggest that she was mentally unstable.

Ngcobo said he had not been aware what might have given the State the idea that his client needed a mental assessment.

Langeni was expected to apply for bail next Wednesday.

Outside court, the Reverend Thamsanqa Dlamini said he did not want to say anything about Langeni, specifically about the type of congregation woman he knew her to be.

“I’d rather talk about her children.

“I check on them constantly, especially because they no longer have a father, and I see myself as a father to them.

“I was with them last night and we prayed, they are still strong spiritually,” he said.

Dlamini said Langane’s children still came to church “and we worship happily together”.

Langeni’s fellow church-goer, Nomxilisi Ntlawuzana, said that she had been disappointed by Langeni’s alleged actions.

“In church she was a nice person, and her role in church had always revolved around money like being the treasurer, but her (alleged) action has disgraced the name of women and mothers,” she said.
