The metro cop at the centre of a sex scandal involving prostitutes has been suspended pending the outcome of a probe.
|||Durban - The metro policeman at the centre of a sex scandal involving prostitutes has been suspended from his post pending the outcome of an internal investigation.
Three of his colleagues who have been identified as possible accomplices, have been stripped of their police powers and given desk jobs out of the city.
This was the outcome of a hearing held at the metro police headquarters on Tuesday into the case of the four officers who are being probed for demanding sex from prostitutes while on duty.
Metro police spokesman Eugene Msomi said all four officers had been suspended on full pay.
“They have been placed on suspension while the investigation continues. It should take three months to complete. The ringleader has been suspended fully and will be at home, while the other three have been placed at locations out of Durban, where they will be in offices,” he said.
The four are all constables attached to the Beachfront satellite station.
The probe against them was launched after video footage showing the “ringleader” officer having sex with prostitutes was discovered by his now former girlfriend, after she opened the files on two BlackBerry memory cards.
Most of the video clips are believed to have been filmed while the officer was working the night shift. Some of the footage is believed to have been shot in his patrol car, while another clip appears to have been shot in the toilets of a metro police satellite office, metro police sources said.
The former girlfriend handed the footage over to the metro police’s Anti-Corruption Unit about nine weeks ago.
