|||Durban - A bodyguard employed by the IFP has been arrested and charged with intimidating a Durban metro police officer.
The bodyguard had double-parked a party Toyota bakkie outside Murchies Passage in Dr Pixley KaSeme (West) Street.
According to a source on Wednesday the policeman had approached the bodyguard and asked him to move the vehicle.
The bodyguard told the officer he was waiting for someone to return from the bank.
He allegedly pointed to a firearm he was wearing in a holster and told the policeman that if he were ticketed, the policeman “will see”.
The policeman called for back-up and, when it arrived, the bodyguard drove off without his passenger.
Police gave chase and arrested him in Devonshire Place, off Anton Lembede (Smith) Street.
IFP deputy national chairman Albert Mncwango confirmed the bodyguard was a member of the party and a bodyguard for one of its officials.
Mncwango was aware the man had a problem with police, but the party was still trying to establish the facts surrounding the incident.
“The laws of the country are the laws. They must be followed irrespective of who a person is or which party they belong to. The matter is before the courts, and will take its course,” he said.
Mncwango said the party would look at the matter internally and, if the need arose, it would take the appropriate disciplinary steps.
The white Toyota bakkie was registered as belonging to the IFP based in Durban.
The bodyguard had a licence for the firearm.
