A FARMWORKER escaped with minor injuries after he was attacked with rocks and a steel rake by a would-be cable thief on Monday morning.

The worker had gone out to investigate a power outage on the farm when he was attacked.

A nearby stable housed the electricity isolator switch, which had been tampered with.

Roy Fox, 53, an employee at Mazarat farm stables and kennels in Brackenhill Road, Waterfall, said he was about to switch on the electricity when a man threw a rock at him.

“I had to dodge some big rocks that he threw at me.”

Fox said the man then went into a stable and brought out a steel rake and lashed out at him. Fox fell on to his back.

His screams alerted his daughter, who came to his aid.

The man fled into the bush.

Fox was taken to hospital where he received treatment for a swollen knee and gash to his leg.

Farm owner Anne Carkeek said there have been numerous burglaries on the premises in the past three weeks.

Hillcrest police are investigating the matter. - Daily News
