|||Durban - A case of attempted murder is being investigated by Melmoth police after an unknown gunman fired several shots into the mayor’s bedroom.
Police said the mayor of Mthonjaneni, Maureen Ndlangamandla, was at home watching televison with her husband at the time.
No one was injured,” said police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane on Wednesday.
“The complainant heard gunshots. The next morning, when opening the curtains, she saw bullet holes in the window, bed headboard and dressing table,” Zwane said.
No arrests had been made.
Melmoth ratepayers have voiced their objection to the cost of bodyguards for the mayor and speaker, which add up to about R700 000 a year.
Police were not able to say if her bodyguards were present at the time of the incident.
The mayor has been controversial from the time she stepped into the post, after the May 2011 local elections, as she was parachuted in by ANC leadership without the support of local ANC structures.
A risk assessment by Eshowe police, done for the municipality, concluded that the main risk came from members of her own party.
