The ANC in the Msunduzi council has called for a discussion about an opinion article in which DA councillor Mergan Chetty criticised the municipality.
|||Durban - The ANC in the Msunduzi council has called for a discussion at Wednesday’s full council meeting about an opinion article in which DA councillor Mergan Chetty criticised the municipality.
The piece was published in The Mercury’s sister newspaper, The Sunday Tribune, on September 8.
Chetty, a member of the mayoral executive committee, wrote that ANC councillors were allowing the re-emergence of the problems that had led the municipality into administration.
On Friday, ANC councillor Mike Tarr issued a memo asking that a private member’s motion be dealt with at tomorrow’s full council.
He said Chetty’s article was intended to reflect badly on the municipality and brought the council into disrepute.
Tarr said it was inappropriate for a councillor and mayoral executive committee member to make insinuations about the integrity of fellow committee members.
He suggested that Chetty appear before a disciplinary committee to substantiate the claims.
In response, Chetty said the DA would not bow to the “bully tactics” of the ANC. He said he was well within his rights to exercise effective oversight in the municipality.
