Pietermaritzburg - A man found guilty of three execution-style murders was given three life sentences by the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Monday.

The sentences handed down to Erwin Ramsamuj, 20, were met with applause from the public gallery.

Ramsamuj shot dead Kubendhram Pillay, Merle Maistry and Musa Ndlovu in Pillay's Pietermaritzburg home in May 2011 because he thought Maistry was having an affair with Pillay.

A 10-year-old boy witnessed one of the murders and testified against Ramsamuj.

Judge Jerome Ngwenya said Ramsamuj tried to establish an alibi by going to a shebeen after the murders.

Ramsamuj had previously been charged with two cases of assault. His mother had allegedly bribed one of the complainants to withdraw the charge. - Sapa
