A Durban woman’s Heritage Day outing turned out to be an occasion to remember.
|||Durban - A Durban woman, who went into labour while at a Heritage Day concert, gave birth to a healthy baby girl in a medical tent.
Nonhle Makhoba, 23, of Inanda, was at the Old Mutual Music at the Lake concert, at Botanic Gardens, when she went into labour.
She and her boyfriend, Lwazi Zikalala, 38, of Ntuzuma, were attending the concert with friends.
Zikalala and his friends were not allowed to have a braai in the park so they decided to go to the beachfront. Makhoba stayed behind with her friends.
Stu Berry of Impi Concerts said as DJ Black Coffee made an appearance on stage, Makhoba experienced labour pains. She was moved from the concert area to the on-site medical facility.
“She went into labour and Emergency Medical Service paramedics, Muhammed Dawood and Tommy Reid, delivered the baby,” said Berry.
Zikalala said a friend had alerted him on WhatsApp that Makhoba was in labour.
“I arrived on time to see her give birth. It was a total surprise. She was only expected to have the baby in mid-October,” he said.
Zikalala said their families would decide on a suitable name for the baby.
But for now, she will be known as Black Coffee.
Coincidentally, Zikalala’s first child, Kwanele Mhlongo, 4, from a previous girlfriend, was born on the same day.
Makhoba also has a three-year-old child, Ziyanda Makhoba, from a previous relationship.
Makhoba and her baby were was taken to King George V Hospital on Tuesday night.
