Durban - Two policemen responding to an armed robbery at a shop on the North Coast are lucky to be alive after they came under fire.

KZN police spokesman, Captain Thulani Zwane, said the incident happened in KwaMaphumulo, near KwaDukuza (Stanger).

The policemen, aged 37 and 56, are recovering in hospital with gunshot wounds.

On their arrival at the shop, the robbers began shooting at them, Zwane said.

“One was wounded on the leg and the other on the thigh,” he said.

No suspects have been arrested. Two counts of attempted murder and business robbery are being investigated.

Meanwhile, police are still searching for the hit-and-run-driver who killed Road Traffic Inspectorate officer Thuli Nhlengethwa on Sunday.

She was trying to flag down the speeding vehicle when she was hit. The stolen Audi A4 was travelling at 141km/h.
