Durban - The KwaZulu-Natal legislature will elect a new premier this week, the provincial legislature said on Wednesday.

He is expected to be sworn in on Thursday, more than a month after former premier Zweli Mkhize announced his resignation on August 23 to take up his duties as full-time African National Congress (ANC) treasurer-general.

The province's education MEC Senzo Mchunu has been acting premier since.

While the ANC was silent on who would succeed Mkhize, media in KwaZulu-Natal speculated it would be either Senzo Mchunu or Willies Mchunu, the ANC's deputy chairman in the province.

Senzo Mchunu narrowly defeated Willies Mchunu earlier this year to become chairman of the party in the province.

The decision on who the ANC nominated to become its preferred candidate for premier in the province did not rest with provincial, but with national party structures.

Senzo Mkhize, the party's provincial spokesman, could not immediately be reached for comment.

Spokesman for the premier's office, Ndabezinhle Sibiya, said he had no idea who his new boss would be. After the election in the legislature, the new premier would be sworn in and make his inaugural speech.

The ANC has a majority in the KwaZulu-Natal legislature.
