Durban - Durban’s humanitarian agency, Gift of the Givers, touched down in Manila in the Philippines late Friday, carrying urgently needed supplies for the typhoon-hit country.

Typhoon Haiyan, one of the world’s most powerful yet, struck the Philippines last week and to date the death toll is estimated at 4 000.

Entire fishing villages have been wiped out and aid is pouring in from around the world.

Dr Imtiaz Sooliman, founder of Gift of the Givers, said a team of 22 people from the organisation were in the Philippines, with a further 20 probably leaving on Monday.

Sooliman said the team was made up of doctors and rescuers, and had taken rescue boats, diving equipment, medical supplies, protein supplements, vaccines and cash for other supplies.

“We are still not sure what the need is right now,” said Sooliman.

“The teams will assess (the situation) and let us know what other expertise and supplies we need to send.”

International agencies have set up makeshift clinics and hospitals to treat injured people, and several miracle births have been recorded in the past days.

Sooliman praised South Africans for wanting to help the people in the Philippines.

“We have had plenty of calls, all supermarkets have come on board, individuals and groups, and some are calling just to thank us for going there to help,” said Sooliman.

“It’s been amazing.” - Independent on Saturday
