|||Pietermaritzburg - A robber was killed and another wounded in a shoot-out with police in Pietermaritzburg on Tuesday, KwaZulu-Natal police said.
Police were alerted about a business robbery along Manchester Road around 10am, said Captain Thulani Zwane.
Five armed men forced employees and a customer at a Cash and Carry outlet into the office and demanded money.
Zwane said the men fled with an undisclosed amount of money, two cellphones, and a wrist watch.
“Police spotted the robbers' vehicle along the N3 freeway towards Durban at high speed and a chase ensued.”
Zwane said the men fired shots at police, who fired back until the robbers' vehicle came to a stand-still.
The driver was found inside the vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body and later died.
“Three of the men were arrested and one was wounded in the shoot-out and taken to hospital,” he said.
Zwane said the men would be charged with armed robbery, attempted murder, and illegal possession of firearms.
The men would appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate's Court soon.
