Durban - Charges of intimidation and pointing a firearm were laid at the Melmoth police station after a mayor’s bodyguard allegedly attacked community members at a public meeting.

A fracas ensued, during which the bodyguard was attacked by members of the community. Mayor Maureen Ndlangamandla and her two bodyguards fled the hall and the meeting was disbanded.

Police confirmed on Wednesday that they had been called out to the hall on Tuesday night to attend to the disturbance, and that the charges had been registered on Wednesday.

The incident took place after the Mthonjaneni municipality had called a meeting in Thubulethu, near Melmoth, to discuss the integrated development plan with the community.

About 30 community members retaliated by attacking the bodyguard, hitting him and throwing chairs at him.

It is alleged that he drew a firearm during the fracas.

Ward councillor Erik Masikane confirmed the incident.
