|||Durban - Two of KwaZulu-Natal's universities will have at least 10 first-time students applying for every available first-year place, according figures released this week.
At the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), there have been 80 000 applications for 8 500 first-year places, according to registrar Prof Jane Meyerowitz.
The Durban University of Technology's (DUT) spokesman Alan Khan said: “The Durban University of Technology has received a total of 76 238 applications for first-year study in 2014. The university expects to register 7100 first-year students next year.”
The demand at the University of Zululand was greatest, with about 27 people (a total of 108 721) having so far applied for each of the 3900 places available, university spokeswoman Normah Zondo said.
The five most popular courses at DUT are bachelor of education, journalism, nursing, emergency medical care, and human resources. DUT expects to have a total student body of about 24 000.
At UKZN the most popular areas of study are bachelor of education, bachelor of social work, and courses in the health science programmes, especially medicine and nursing.
The institution had received 8000 applications for the 200
first-year places available at its Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine.
There had been 20,000 applications for UKZN's 950 first-year bachelor of education places.
No figures for the Mangosutho University of Technology could be obtained.
Matriculants can expect to have their final results released early in the new year and will then know if they meet the criteria for the courses they have applied for.
