Pietermaritzburg - Two men were expected to appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday in connection with the murder of one man and wounding of another in two hijackings.

Police spokesman, Colonel Jay Naicker, said the 21-year-olds were arrested after a tip-off, one at a shop in Pietermaritz Street and the other in Ladysmith.

In the first incident, Sandile Hadebe, 36, was shot dead outside his home in Prince Alfred Street last Wednesday.

“It is believed that Hadebe was returning home from work in his red Opel Corsa. On opening his gate he was confronted by two men, one armed with a firearm,” Naicker said.

“An altercation ensued and it is believed the victim may have thrown his keys to one side.”

Hadebe was shot in the back and left on the side of the road.

The suspects could not start the car and fled on foot.

A short while later 37-year-old Bongani Mthethwa was shot in the stomach in Watt Lane. He is in hospital and in a stable condition.

It is understood that Mthethwa was sitting in his silver VW Golf with a friend when two men, one armed with a firearm, confronted them.

“It is alleged the suspects forced them out of the vehicle and demanded the keys,” Naicker said.

Mthethwa is said to have handed over the keys then attempted to run to safety, but the gunman opened fire.

The assailants got into the vehicle and fled.
