Durban - Private security guards and police arrested five suspects after a shoot-out in the Durban CBD, where a businessman had been followed to his offices after withdrawing a large amount of cash from a bank.

A police source said on Tuesday that the suspects’ car belonged to the family of a young policeman, Warrant Officer Rylin Moonilall, who was hijacked and murdered in Newlands West last week.

The five suspects have been charged with robbery and were remanded after they appeared in court on Monday.

They had allegedly attempted the armed robbery on Dr AB Xuma Street (Commercial Road), where they awaited the return of a businessman after his visit to the bank.

The suspects pounced on the businessman carrying a large amount of cash, the source said.

He said they took the money and fled but the businessman contacted his security company, whose guards managed to catch up with them as they were leaving the building.

A shoot-out ensued between the suspects and the guards, he said.

Police sources said the suspects were being investigated for a possible link to the murder of Moonilall, killed last week during a hijacking. Moonilall and his girlfriend were hijacked and the policeman managed to push her to safety before he was shot and ejected from the car.

Police spokesman, Colonel Jay Naicker, said the police and metro police were alerted to the CBD shooting.

He said the incident was being investigated.
