|||Durban - A 26-year-old man, who ran a registration scam outside Durban University of Technology, was to appear in court on Friday to face charges of fraud.
The man was arrested outside DUT in Steve Biko (Mansfield) Road, Berea, yesterday.
According to police three men allegedly lured new students to “register” for enrolment at DUT with them to avoid long queues.
They directed students to pay the registration fees to their accomplice in a vehicle parked nearby. The men then issued the students with documents and receipts with the DUT letterheads and logos. They asked students to pay an upfront deposit of R5 000.
Police have traced the whereabouts of one of the students who paid the men. They are appealing to any other victims to report to the Berea Police station. Colonel Jay Naicker said two of the man’s accomplices were on the run.
