|||KwaZulu-Natal - A prisoner facing double murder charges has fatally shot himself in the cells at New Hanover Magistrate’s Court.
Sibelo Cebekhulu, 38, who was charged with the murder of Bernard Mkhize and another person in June, grabbed the firearm of a court orderly.
Police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane said the shooting occurred at about 3pm on Friday.
“The policeman wrestled with the prisoner for the gun, but (he) ran off… and shot himself inside one of the cells. The firearm was recovered next to the prisoner’s body,” Zwane said.
Cebekhulu was arrested for a double-murder and house robbery in Wartburg in December last year.
An inquest has been opened and investigations are under way to determine how Cebekhulu could have grabbed the weapon out of the court orderly’s holster.
