Durban - Hanuman stick murder accused Rajan Kandasamy will be admitted to the Fort Napier mental institution on Tuesday for mental observation.

The Durban man, who allegedly beat to death his wife and their two children, aged 18 and 17, appeared in the Chatsworth Magistrate’s Court on Monday. The matter was postponed to April 10 after a bed had been secured for Kandasamy, 44, at Fort Napier.

On February 14, Natasha Ramkisson, National Prosecuting Authority spokeswoman, said it had not been possible to get a bed for Kandasamy in a mental institution.

But on Monday State prosecutor Lolly Soobramoney said the accused would be admitted to the Pietermaritzburg institution today. “He will remain in the hospital for 30 days. The accused will not be allowed visitation by his legal representation or family members unless prior arrangements have been made,” Soobramoney said.

Kandasamy allegedly used a Hanuman stick or gada – a traditional Indian mace carried by the Hindu god Hanuman – to beat to death his wife and children. Their bloodied and battered bodies were found in the family home on December 29.

Friends called police after they failed to attend a memorial service. Kandasamy was handed over to police by his relatives on New Year’s Eve.
