A man accused of raping and robbing a 91-year-old woman was sentenced to 15 years in prison by a Pietermaritzurg court.
|||Pietermaritzurg - A man accused of raping and robbing an elderly woman was sentenced to 15 years in prison by the Pietermaritzurg Regional Court, the Witness reported on Wednesday.
Sanele Latha, 23, confessed to raping the woman, 91, on February 17, according to a statement read in court by legal aid lawyer Nitesh Binessarie, the paper reported.
Latha said he gained entrance to the woman's house by removing one of the windows.
“Once inside I came into contact with the complainant. I then produced a knife which I used to threaten the complainant,” Latha said in the statement.
He demanded money from the woman, searched the house and found R250. Latha then raped her.
Magistrate Jaco Jordaan sentenced Latha to 15 years in prison for the break-in and robbery and a further 15 years for raping the woman.
He ordered the sentences to run concurrently and recommended that Latha must not be considered for parole until he had served two thirds of his sentence. - Sapa
