|||Durban - The semi-naked and hacked bodies of three men were found at a sports ground in Gandhi informal settlement near Phoenix yesterday.
A cartridge was found at the scene, but police were unable to confirm if the men - who have yet to be identified - were shot, such is the extent of their injuries.
A blue rug and yellow grocery packet half-full of blood, were also found. The grass nearby was bloodstained.
ANC ward councillor Thulani Kunju speculated that the bodies had been dumped on the field.
“A rug was used to carry their bodies. One man’s legs were tied with rope,” said Kunju.
He said the bodies had been found by joggers.
Residents living near the field said they felt unsafe and wanted more police protection.
Nhlanhla Nzuza, 29, who lives nearby said, “Crime is becoming intolerable in the area. Residents get mugged in broad daylight without getting any assistance. The high crime rate was caused by high unemployment and the spread of whoonga addiction.
The inefficiency in the police system was also a contributing factor.”
Police spokesman, Colonel Vincent Mdunge, said the dead men appeared to be aged from 20 to 27.
He said post-mortems would be conducted to determine the causes of death.
No arrests had been made.
