KwaZulu-Natal - The manhunt for the gunmen who killed five brothers and another relative in Muden, near Greytown, continued on Sunday, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

“We are still on the ground in pursuit, but unfortunately there have been no arrests yet,” Colonel Vincent Mdunge said just before 9am.

At 3am on Saturday, the family was asleep in separate rondavels when five men armed with AK-47 rifles and handguns opened fire on them.

“These men started to raid the rondavels and flat houses [all in the same settlement] room by room.”

Four men sleeping in one rondavel were all killed, as were two other men in separate rondavels. The victims were five adult brothers and their nephew.

Three boys aged three, four and 17 were injured. The four-year-old was discharged from hospital by Sunday morning. Mdunge said the hospital could not be named for security reasons.

The gang did not take any belongings from the family. The motive for the murders was still unknown.

“The provincial commissioner has assembled a task team to hunt down the five suspects,” Mdunge said. - Sapa
