|||Durban - Two police officers accused of trying to bribe a taxi owner in KwaZulu-Natal appeared in the Ntuzuma Magistrate's Court on Monday.
Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) spokesman Moses Dlamini said they were granted R2000 bail each and would appear again on April 12.
The 45-year-old warrant officer and 41-year-old sergeant approached a taxi owner who had bought an imported vehicle in February. They allegedly told the taxi owner imported vehicles were no longer allowed on South African roads.
“They asked a bribe from the driver in exchange for them organising special documents that would enable his vehicle to continue to operate,” Dlamini said.
The police demanded R3000 from the taxi driver, after he pleaded to have the original asking price reduced.
The taxi owner managed to raise R2000, which he gave to police on February 22. Arrangements were made for the police to collect the remaining R1000 later.
The officers were arrested on Friday after the Ipid set up a trap where the officers were expecting to receive the R2000. - Sapa
