|||Durban - KwaZulu-Natal education MEC Senzo Mchunu has been elected chairman of the African National Congress in KwaZulu-Natal.
Mchunu defeated the party's incumbent provincial deputy chairman Willies Mchunu for the top position in a close vote at the party's provincial general council.
ANC spokesman Bongani Mthembu said Senzo Mchunu garnered 385 votes to the 373 of Willies Mchunu.
Senzo Mchunu replaces KwaZulu-Natal premier Zweli Mkhize as head of the party in the province. Mkhize had to vacate his position after he was elected national treasurer general of the part at the national elective conference in Mangaung last year.
The party's provincial secretary Sihle Zikalala said at a press conference earlier on Saturday afternoon said the battle for the leadership of the party in the province was a very relaxed affair.
“I haven't seen a t-shirt with Willies or Senzo on it,” he joked.
Delegates also elected three new provincial executive members. Zikalala said while voting would be taking place the party's PGC, it was focusing on how to improve its results in the 2014 national election. In the last national election, the party won almost 62 percent of the vote in the province.
Zikalala also said that a report by Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma over allegations of irregularities in the list processes for councillors leading up to the 2011 local-government elections, had been presented.
He said, without providing more details, that its recommendations were being implemented. - Sapa
