|||Durban - A seven-year-old boy drowned at the Glenmore Lagoon, at Glenmore Beach, four kilometres north-east of Port Edward on Monday.
The unnamed boy and his family from Kempton Park had walked to the beach from their holiday accommodation with a large group of holidaymakers.
Some of the children, including teenagers had run ahead to the beach and the boy had joined them, said Alan Stilwell, the NSRI Port Edward duty controller.
Stilwell believed the children had crossed the lagoon, “swimming and wading through the lagoon to get to the other side, when the seven-year-old got into difficulty… and disappeared under water,” Stilwell said.
The uBuntu lifeguards, Police Search and Rescue team and the NSRI Port Edward volunteer sea rescue duty crew all responded and the NSRI’s Discovery Rescue craft was launched to help the search.
The police divers located the boy’s body. The police have opened an inquest docket.
