|||Durban - Burglars made off with jewellery after a brazen break-in at Cherry Design Jewellery at the Gateway Theatre of Shopping on Tuesday night.
It is suspected they entered through the front door.
Police believe a duplicate key could have been used. It is believed arrests are imminent.
Police spokesman, Colonel Vincent Mdunge, refused to be drawn on whether police were investigating the possibility of an inside job.
“We cannot be driven by speculation - our job is to investigate,” he said. A police source said jewellery worth about R5 million was stolen.
Mdunge said the Durban North police station was investigating a case of housebreaking and theft.
He could not reveal the value of the jewellery stolen from the shop’s safe.
Last night, after the theft, a single policeman and two ADT security personnel were seen outside the shop, as jewellery shop owner, Gary Cherry and others waited for police to gather fingerprints and other evidence.
The safe was slightly damaged but was closed when a Daily News team arrived at the scene.
In 2006, armed robbers grabbed watches worth millions from the shop. Owner Gary Cherry, said at the time he had employed a security guard to protect his premises.
