Durban - The man accused of shooting Radley Arendse outside a church in Sydenham has allegedly committed suicide near his home in Wentworth.

Police spokesman, Captain Thulani Zwane, said a 48-year-old man allegedly shot himself in the head yesterday. An inquest docket was opened at the Wentworth police station for investigation. A firearm was found next to his body.

Police traced the owner of the vehicle that was used during the crime. The owner gave a statement to police on Sunday night. Police were about to arrest the man when they were notified of his death.

Sydenham police have opened a case of attempted murder. Detective Warrant Officer Pravin Seebaluk said investigations were at a sensitive stage. He said more people needed to be interviewed in the matter.

Arendse was wounded in the parking area of the New Apostolic Church in Saunders Road. Witnesses said they heard a noise and saw Arendse fall next to the entrance gate.

Arendse is currently in the ICU at St Augustine’s Hospital.
