Sthembiso Ngidi, executive member of the party’s Jacobs branch, was shot dead in Swinton Road in the township.
Provincial ANC spokesman Bongani Mthembu condemned the “barbaric and senseless” killing.
“The ANC is shocked by this shameful attack and we call upon our law enforcement agencies to ensure the perpetrators are successfully prosecuted,” said Mthembu.
He said Ngidi had served his community with distinction.
“The ANC sends its deepest condolences to the Ngidi family, comrades and friends,” he said.
SAPS spokesman Captain Thulane Zwane said police were investigating a case of murder.
“The motive was unknown,” said Zwane.
No arrests have been made.
l Meanwhile, Community Safety and Liaison MEC Willies Mchunu has condemned the violent protests and the torching of a councillor’s office in Glebelands, uMlazi, at the weekend.
The Daily News reported yesterday that angry hostel residents had set fire to the office after an eThekwini mayor’s office representative failed to attend a meeting with residents.
“The burning of the offices seems premeditated and those who are behind this must face the music,” said Mchunu.
The MEC, who addressed eThekwini and hostel leaders on Sunday, said: “We cannot tolerate anarchy. People have a right to protest within the parameters of the law, but vandalising and burning properties is not acceptable.”
