Durban - A minibus taxi driver, 34, is recovering in hospital after he was shot five times and then robbed of his Toyota HiAce in Foreman Road, Sydenham, on Tuesday.

The hijacked taxi has yet to be recovered.

According to police reports, the taxi driver, L Sotsana of Clare Estate, was driving to Durban when three men boarded his taxi masquerading as passengers.

Two of the men sat behind Sotsana, while the third sat next to him.

Police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane said the man seated next to the driver pointed a firearm at him.

“The remaining two men tried to strangle him from behind while he was driving. A scuffle occurred when the driver tried to put up resistance.

“One of the men shot him five times and pushed him out of the taxi.”

Police said the hijackers drove off.

“The wounded taxi driver managed to walk a few metres along the road and alert another taxi driver, who then rushed him to a nearby hospital. He was treated for gunshot wounds on his arms and back.

“No arrests have been made. A case of carjacking and attempted murder was opened.”
