Durban - KZN MEC for Transport Community Safety and Liaison Willies Mchunu is angry and shocked after two bodies were found riddled with bullets and dumped at the side of the road near a Greytown plantation.

The bodies of student constable Xolani Kwela, 26, who had been stationed at the Pinetown police station, and Sindisiwe Ngcobo, 25, were found on Wednesday.

Police have arrested two suspects. Mchunu sent his condolences to the families, saying it was particularly disturbing that one of the suspects was a police officer.

That a police officer had been arrested underlined that no-one was above the law.

Provincial police spokesman, Captain Thulani Zwane, said Kwela and Ngcobo were allegedly kidnapped in KwaNdengezi, near Pinetown, last Monday. It was believed Kwela had been driving a family taxi from KwaNdengezi, but had not returned home.

Family reported him missing at the KwaNdengezi police station, where a case of kidnapping was opened. “The taxi was found abandoned the next day,” he said.

In a joint operation by Greytown Cluster, Pietermaritzburg Organised Crime and KwaNdengezi detectives, Zwane said the two suspects were arrested and were found with unlicensed pistols.

The police constable, 28, was arrested in KwaNdengezi, and the second suspect, aged 20, in KwaDukuza.

He was also wanted for hijacking cases, Zwane said.

KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni condemned the killings and sent her condolences.
