The NPA says Bethuel Mondli Zuma - the policeman who almost became Gauteng’s commissioner - will appear in court today.

Pietermaritzburg - The man who was about to become Gauteng's new provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant-General Bethuel Mondli Zuma, is set to appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said.

“The trial is set to resume today and the magistrate will make a ruling regarding the way forward,” NPA spokeswoman Natasha Ramkisson said.

National police commissioner Riah Phiyega announced Zuma as the Gauteng police commissioner on August 31, but withdrew the decision when it emerged he had a pending case against him.

Zuma was arrested in Pietermaritzburg in September 2008 for alleged drunk driving and not stopping at a roadblock. He is also alleged to have prevented traffic officers from taking a blood sample to test for alcohol and locking himself inside a house for two hours.

Phiyega said she was not aware of the criminal investigation against Zuma and came under fire over whether adequate background checks had been conducted on him.

He is not related to President Jacob Zuma. - Sapa
